Summer Topic
Topic title:
Adventure in Space
Dear parents and carers,
Here is our summer term topic plan. Please take some time to share this with your child. Children can use this plan as a tool to research the topic of space on the internet and through reading books. We would like to encourage you to use the local library as they have a selection of topic books available. If you have any interesting resources on space please send them to school so we can share them with the children. At Hawthorn Park we always value the help and support the children receive from home.

Areas of learning
As Geographers we will be asking geographical questions about our planet and the galaxy. We will be using geographical language, atlases and globes. We will use ICT to help in geographical investigations
As Scientists we will be asking questions about space. We will explore, using the senses of sight, hearing and touch as appropriate, and make and record observations and measurements. We will explore how light travels from a source. We will study different rocks and soils in the local environment.
As Design Technologists we will design and construct our own space rocket.
Confident Individuals
Enterprise
As enterprising people we will:
Hold an astronaut training event. We will advertise, plan and deliver the event. We will set up an astronaut training school. We will invite children to test their fitness in order to select the right person for the next space mission.
Responsible Citizens
Environment
As people concerned with our environment we will:
Look at protecting our planet. This will involve our school and the local community.
Spiritual and Moral
In our Spiritual and Moral development we will:
Decide as a group is it right to send people/animals into space. We will explore questions of awe and wonder related to space. We will explore the significance of the moon and its relevance to faiths.
Essentials for Learning and Life
Using communication
Writing:
Poem – We will explore the theme of space through the writing of poetry, newspaper articles and information articles.
Presenting: - We will present the different layouts and features of text.
Broadcasting: - We will create our own broadcast of space.
Using mathematics
We will explore calendars, the seasons, time, the moon, and the distance between planets. We will apply our mathematical skills by measuring accurately when designing and making objects. We will collect data from our astronaut training event. We will interpret the data and ask mathematical questions.
Using ITC
Searching:
Use internet to find information about space. We will be fact finding information on planets.
Developing ideas and making things happen:
We will create databases on space and undergo a space simulation.
